AFN Pacific – Making Pottery

KOREA IS KNOWN FOR EXCELLENT POTTERY, NOT
ONLY FOR THE BEAUTY OF THE PIECES BUT ALSO FOR THEIR USEFULNESS.
I START OFF SCULPTING WITH MY HANDS. THE POTTERY INSTRUCTOR, KIM CHUL SOO GAVE ME A CHUNK OF
CLAY AND HAD ME START WORKING WITH IT. THE CLAY WAS SOFT, MAKING IT QUITE EASY TO
MOLD. I LIKE MAKING POTTERY AS WELL AS TEACHING IT TO OTHERS.
I HAD A FEW FOREIGN STUDENTS AND THE IMPRESSIONS THAT I HAD FROM THEM WERE THAT THEY TEND TO
BE MORE CREATIVE THEN KOREAN STUDENTS. THEIR MINDS WERE FREE, MAKING IT ENJOYABLE
TO TEACH. AFTER MAKING THE CUP WE MOVED ON TO THE SPINNING WHEEL TO MAKE A BOWL.
THE IDEA OF FORMING CLAY WHILE IT’S SPINNING WAS REALLY INTERESTING. EVEN WITH LITTLE FORCE,
THE WHEEL HELPED SHAPE THE CLAY. WORKING ON A SPINNING WHEEL MAY LOOK EASY
BUT HELD A LEVEL OF DIFICULTY I WASN’T AWARE OF. THROWING POTTERY CAN HELP PEOPLE IMPROVE
THEIR LEVEL OF CONCENTRATION. I REALLY THOUGHT THAT THIS WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE
AND WOULD LIKE TO RECOMMEND THIS TO OTHERS. ITS CREATIVE, FUN AND ALSO DIRTY!
